Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an eSIM for Puerto Rico, or does my US plan work there?

Since Puerto Rico is a US territory, most major US carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon include Puerto Rico in their domestic plans at no extra charge. However, if you're traveling from outside the US or have a limited domestic plan, a Puerto Rico eSIM is an excellent way to get affordable, reliable data coverage across the island. Always check with your carrier before traveling to avoid unexpected roaming fees.

What networks does an eSIM in Puerto Rico connect to?

An eSIM for Puerto Rico typically connects to major networks such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and Claro Puerto Rico, which provide extensive 4G LTE and growing 5G coverage across the island. These networks offer reliable connectivity in metropolitan areas like San Juan, Ponce, and Mayagüez, as well as popular tourist destinations like Old San Juan and El Yunque National Forest. Coverage may be limited in very remote mountainous areas.

How do I activate an eSIM for Puerto Rico before my trip?

Activating an eSIM for Puerto Rico is simple and can be done before you depart. After purchasing your eSIM plan, you'll receive a QR code via email - scan it using your phone's settings under Cellular > Add eSIM, and the eSIM profile will be downloaded. You can install it at home and set it to activate automatically when you arrive in Puerto Rico, ensuring instant connectivity upon landing.

Is my phone compatible with eSIM for use in Puerto Rico?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and above, and many recent Motorola and Huawei models. To check compatibility, go to your phone's settings and look for an option to add a cellular or eSIM plan. Make sure your device is carrier-unlocked before purchasing an eSIM for Puerto Rico to ensure seamless activation.

How much data do I need on my Puerto Rico eSIM for a week-long trip?

For a typical week-long trip to Puerto Rico, most travelers find that 3-5 GB of data is sufficient for navigation, social media, messaging, and light streaming. If you plan on video calling, uploading lots of photos, or streaming music while exploring beaches like Flamenco Beach or the bioluminescent bays, consider a 7-10 GB eSIM plan. Using Wi-Fi at hotels and restaurants can help conserve your mobile data allowance.

Is an eSIM cheaper than international roaming in Puerto Rico?

For international travelers visiting Puerto Rico, an eSIM is significantly cheaper than traditional international roaming, which can cost $10-20 per day or more with most carriers. A dedicated Puerto Rico eSIM plan can provide several gigabytes of data for a fraction of the roaming cost, often starting at just a few dollars. This makes eSIMs the most cost-effective solution for staying connected while exploring Puerto Rico without worrying about surprise charges on your phone bill.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
