Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work for travelers visiting Iraq?

An eSIM for Iraq is a digital SIM that allows you to connect to local Iraqi mobile networks without needing a physical SIM card. You simply purchase an eSIM plan online before your trip, scan the QR code with your compatible device, and activate your data plan upon arrival. This gives you instant access to mobile data through networks like Zain Iraq, Asiacell, or Korek Telecom, depending on your eSIM provider's partnerships.

Which phones and devices are compatible with eSIM in Iraq?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and above, and select iPad and Huawei models. Before purchasing an eSIM for Iraq, check that your device is carrier-unlocked and has eSIM functionality enabled. You can verify this by going to your device settings or contacting your home carrier to confirm unlock status.

What is the network coverage and data speed like with an eSIM in Iraq?

eSIM coverage in Iraq primarily relies on major carriers such as Zain Iraq, Asiacell, and Korek Telecom, which offer solid 4G LTE coverage in cities like Baghdad, Erbil, Basra, and Sulaymaniyah. In rural and remote areas, coverage may drop to 3G or become limited, so it's advisable to download offline maps before traveling to less populated regions. Overall, data speeds in major urban centers are sufficient for navigation, messaging, and video calls.

How much does an eSIM for Iraq cost compared to international roaming?

An eSIM data plan for Iraq typically costs between $5 and $30 depending on the data allowance and validity period, making it significantly cheaper than international roaming charges. Most home carriers charge $10–$20 per megabyte for roaming in Iraq, which can result in bills of hundreds of dollars for basic usage. By using a travel eSIM, you can save up to 90% on data costs while enjoying reliable local network connectivity throughout your trip.

Can I activate my Iraq eSIM before arriving in the country?

Yes, most eSIM providers allow you to purchase and install your Iraq eSIM before departure, so your plan is ready to connect as soon as you land. It's recommended to download and install the eSIM profile while you still have Wi-Fi access at home, then simply enable the data plan when you arrive in Iraq. Some providers offer instant activation upon landing, while others may require you to manually select the local network in your device's cellular settings.

Do I need to remove my regular SIM card to use an eSIM in Iraq?

No, one of the biggest advantages of using an eSIM in Iraq is dual-SIM functionality, which lets you keep your regular physical SIM card active alongside the eSIM. This means you can receive calls and texts on your home number while using the Iraqi eSIM for affordable local data. Simply set the eSIM as your primary data line in your phone's cellular settings and keep your physical SIM for calls if needed.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
