Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work in Guernsey?

An eSIM in Guernsey works by connecting to local mobile networks such as Sure (Guernsey) and JT (Jersey Telecom), which provide coverage across the island. Once you purchase and activate your eSIM plan before or during your trip, it downloads a digital SIM profile to your device, giving you instant access to mobile data without needing a physical SIM card. This makes it the most convenient way to stay connected while exploring Guernsey's beautiful coastline and attractions.

Is my phone compatible with an eSIM for Guernsey?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and above. Before purchasing an eSIM for Guernsey, check your device settings to confirm eSIM compatibility and ensure your phone is carrier-unlocked. You can usually verify this by navigating to your phone's cellular or mobile data settings and looking for an option to add a digital SIM plan.

What network coverage can I expect with an eSIM in Guernsey?

Guernsey has reliable 4G LTE coverage across most of the island, provided by networks like Sure and JT. You can expect strong signal strength in St. Peter Port, the main town, as well as in most coastal areas and parishes. Some remote cliff paths or rural spots may experience slightly reduced speeds, but overall, mobile network quality in Guernsey is excellent for browsing, navigation, and video calls.

How do I activate my eSIM before traveling to Guernsey?

Activating your eSIM for Guernsey is straightforward - after purchasing your plan, you'll receive a QR code via email that you scan using your phone's camera from the cellular settings menu. It's recommended to download and install the eSIM profile before departure while connected to Wi-Fi, then simply enable the data plan when you arrive in Guernsey. Most eSIM providers allow you to choose your plan start date, so you won't waste any data days during transit.

Is an eSIM cheaper than international roaming in Guernsey?

Yes, using an eSIM in Guernsey is significantly cheaper than traditional international roaming, which can cost up to $10–$15 per MB with some carriers. An eSIM travel plan typically offers several gigabytes of data for a fraction of that cost, with prices starting as low as a few dollars per day. It's important to note that Guernsey is not part of the UK or EU, so many European roaming packages do not include coverage there, making a dedicated eSIM plan an even smarter choice.

How much data do I need for a trip to Guernsey?

For a typical vacation in Guernsey lasting 3–7 days, most travelers find that 1–3 GB of eSIM data is sufficient for navigation, messaging, social media, and light browsing. If you plan to video call frequently or stream content, consider a plan with 5 GB or more to avoid running out. To conserve data, download offline maps of Guernsey beforehand and connect to free Wi-Fi available at many hotels, cafés, and restaurants in St. Peter Port.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
