Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work for travelers visiting Greece?

An eSIM for Greece is a digital SIM that allows you to connect to Greek mobile networks without needing a physical SIM card. You simply purchase an eSIM plan online before your trip, scan a QR code, and activate your data plan - often before you even land in Athens. Once activated, your device connects to top Greek networks like Cosmote, Vodafone Greece, or Wind Hellas, giving you instant mobile data access throughout the country.

Which phones and devices are compatible with eSIM in Greece?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent iPad and Apple Watch models. Before purchasing a Greece eSIM plan, make sure your device is carrier-unlocked and has eSIM capability enabled in your settings. You can check this by going to your device settings and looking for the option to add a cellular or mobile data plan.

What network coverage can I expect with an eSIM in Greece?

Greece has excellent 4G/LTE coverage across major cities like Athens, Thessaloniki, and Heraklion, as well as popular tourist islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete. The three main carriers - Cosmote (the largest), Vodafone Greece, and Wind Hellas - provide reliable coverage in most populated areas. Remote mountainous regions and smaller, less-visited islands may experience reduced signal strength, so downloading offline maps is recommended for those areas.

How much does a Greece eSIM cost compared to international roaming?

A travel eSIM for Greece typically costs between $5 and $25 depending on the data allowance and validity period, which is significantly cheaper than international roaming charges from most home carriers. Roaming fees can easily exceed $10–$15 per day, meaning an eSIM plan can save you up to 80-90% on data costs during your Greek vacation. Many eSIM providers also offer flexible plans ranging from 1 GB for short trips to 10 GB or more for extended stays.

When should I activate my eSIM for Greece, and how long does it take?

Most Greece eSIM plans can be installed before your trip and activated either immediately upon purchase or when you arrive and connect to a Greek network. The installation process typically takes just 2-5 minutes - you scan the QR code provided by your eSIM provider, follow the on-screen prompts, and select the new eSIM as your data line. It's recommended to install the eSIM while you still have Wi-Fi access at home so you're ready to go as soon as you land in Greece.

Can I use my eSIM on the Greek islands and for making phone calls?

Yes, most eSIM plans provide data coverage across the Greek islands, including popular destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu, and Crete, though coverage quality depends on the carrier network used. Most travel eSIM plans are data-only, meaning they don't include traditional voice calls or SMS - however, you can easily make calls and send messages using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Skype over your data connection. Some premium eSIM providers do offer plans with voice minutes if phone calls are essential for your trip.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
