Frequently Asked Questions

Does eSIM work in Ethiopia?

Yes, eSIM technology works in Ethiopia, though the country's telecom market is more restricted than many other destinations. Ethio Telecom is the primary network operator and provides coverage across major cities like Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, and Gondar. Travelers should purchase an international eSIM before arrival since local eSIM options may be limited or require in-person registration with ID documents.

Which phones are compatible with an Ethiopia eSIM?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and later, and Samsung Galaxy S20+ models. Before traveling to Ethiopia, check your device settings under 'Cellular' or 'Mobile Data' to confirm eSIM compatibility, or dial *#06# to see if an EID number appears. It's also important to ensure your phone is carrier-unlocked so it can accept a new eSIM profile.

How do I activate my eSIM for Ethiopia?

Activating an Ethiopia eSIM is simple and can typically be done before you even board your flight. After purchasing a plan, you'll receive a QR code via email that you scan using your phone's camera in the eSIM setup menu. Once installed, enable data roaming and select the appropriate network profile upon landing to get connected instantly without needing a physical SIM card.

What is the network coverage and speed like in Ethiopia?

Network coverage in Ethiopia is generally reliable in urban centers like Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Hawassa, with 4G LTE available through Ethio Telecom in most populated areas. However, rural and remote regions, including parts of the Simien Mountains or Omo Valley, may only have 2G/3G coverage or no signal at all. Travelers heading to national parks or countryside areas should download offline maps and content in advance as a precaution.

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Ethiopia?

Using an eSIM for Ethiopia is almost always more affordable than traditional international roaming charges from your home carrier. Roaming fees can cost several dollars per megabyte, while prepaid eSIM data plans offer bundled packages starting from just a few dollars for multiple gigabytes. This makes eSIMs a budget-friendly choice for tourists, business travelers, and digital nomads visiting Ethiopia for short or extended stays.

How can I manage my data usage effectively with an Ethiopia eSIM?

To make the most of your Ethiopia eSIM data plan, use Wi-Fi whenever available at hotels, cafes, and airports to conserve mobile data for essential tasks. Turn off automatic app updates and background data syncing in your phone settings to prevent unnecessary data consumption. Additionally, monitor your usage through your eSIM provider's app, and consider purchasing a top-up plan if you're staying longer or traveling to multiple cities within Ethiopia.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
