Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work in DR Congo?

An eSIM for DR Congo works by downloading a digital SIM profile directly to your compatible device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. Once activated, your eSIM connects to local networks such as Vodacom Congo, Airtel Congo, or Orange RDC, giving you mobile data access across the country. This is especially convenient for travelers who want to stay connected upon arrival in Kinshasa or other major cities without visiting a local shop.

Which phones and devices are compatible with eSIM in DR Congo?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and above. Before purchasing an eSIM for DR Congo, check your device settings to confirm eSIM capability and ensure your phone is carrier-unlocked. Some iPads, Apple Watches, and newer Android tablets also support eSIM connectivity.

What is the network coverage and quality like for eSIM users in DR Congo?

Network coverage in DR Congo is strongest in major urban areas like Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma, and Mbuji-Mayi, where 4G LTE is generally available through providers such as Vodacom Congo and Airtel. However, rural and remote regions may have limited or intermittent coverage, often dropping to 3G or 2G. Travelers venturing outside major cities should download offline maps and essential content in advance to manage connectivity gaps.

How do I activate an eSIM before traveling to DR Congo?

You can purchase and activate your DR Congo eSIM before departure by selecting a data plan from an eSIM provider and scanning the provided QR code in your device's cellular settings. Most eSIM plans can be installed at home and set to activate automatically once your device detects a local network in DR Congo. It's recommended to install the eSIM while connected to Wi-Fi and keep your QR code saved in case you need to reinstall.

Is using an eSIM in DR Congo cheaper than international roaming?

Yes, using a prepaid eSIM in DR Congo is significantly cheaper than traditional international roaming charges from most carriers. Roaming fees in Central Africa can be extremely high, often exceeding $10-15 per megabyte, whereas eSIM data plans typically offer 1GB to 10GB packages at a fraction of the cost. Purchasing a travel eSIM plan in advance gives you predictable costs and helps you avoid unexpected charges on your phone bill.

Can I use my eSIM for calls and texts while in DR Congo?

Most travel eSIM plans for DR Congo are data-only, meaning they provide mobile internet but not traditional voice calls or SMS. However, you can easily make calls and send messages using data-based apps like WhatsApp, Skype, or Zoom over your eSIM data connection. Some eSIM providers do offer plans with voice minutes, so check your plan details carefully if phone calls are essential for your trip to DR Congo.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
